BC Archives collection taps in to Canadian pioneers prior to 1892

Attention genealogists! The Royal BC Museum/BC Archives has published a searchable collection of over 10,000 application forms for pioneer medallions presented to BC residents who were either born in Canada or living in Canada prior to January 1, 1892.

Series GR-1489, Pioneer medallion application forms, consists of application forms for the medallions, which were presented by the Canadian Confederation Centennial Committee of British Columbia as part of Canada’s 1967 Centennial celebrations.

Series GR-1489 compliments series GR-1490, which comprises application forms for pioneer medallions presented by the British Columbia Centennial ’71 Committee to BC residents who were either born in Canada or living in Canada prior to January 1, 1897.

Users can search both collections to find the names of applicants, dates and places of birth, names of applicants’ fathers, maiden names of applicants’ wives and mothers, names of applicants’ brothers and sisters, and other genealogical details.

To search a collection:

  1. Visit either series home page: GR-1489 (medallions from 1967 for pioneers prior to 1892) or GR-1490 (medallions from 1971 for pioneers prior to 1897).
  2. Select the “Quick Search” tab at the left of the page.
  3. Enter your search term (name, town, etc.).
