Japanese Hall 1928-2018: The Story of Resilience, Survival and Transformation

The Japanese School Hall is a Vancouver institution, opened in 1906. By stubbornness and luck its board retained ownership through the war, and in 1953 a portion of the property was returned. Today it has been renovated and  has dedicated itself to education, childcare, and service to Vancouver’s downtown east side (DTES).

The human devastation of the DTES has its roots in the vacuum created when the strong and prosperous Japanese community was made to leave in 1942.
