It is with sadness that we note the passing of BCHF honorary lifetime member Melva Dwyer on November 13, 2017.
Melva served as the BCHF Honorary President from 2003 to 2005, as the indexer for the British Columbia Historical News volumes 1-40, and as a reviewer for the British Columbia Historical News. She organized countless workshops for the BCHF from 1998 to 2005, thus helping to expand membership and educate members on topics related to archives, oral history, genealogy, privacy legislation and more. In 2009, Melva received a BCHF Certificate of Appreciation in honour of her various and wide-reaching contributions to the Federation.
Melva was an active member of the Vancouver Historical Society, from which she received an Award of Merit in 1995. She also compiled the Bibliography of British Columbia for BC Studies for many years.
Melva completed her MA in History at UBC in 1961, then embarked on a successful career in art librarianship as the head of the Fine Arts Library at the University of British Columbia, and as a professor of Librarianship. The Melva J. Dwyer Award, administered by the Canadian Liaison to the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), honours Melva’s contributions to art librarianship.
