Presentation by Wendy Wickwire
“Public History: Between the Profession and the People” —Public history emerged in the 1970s as a challenge to what many historians saw as their discipline’s isolation within academia. History, they argued, should have a more active presence in the public sphere with community collaboration as a defining goal. From the 1990s on, the internet took this initiative to a new level by creating a range of digital spaces for the public dissemination of research and analysis. Drawing from Wickwire’s own experience as well as that of her BC colleagues, this talk will discuss the implications of the changes wrought by this new way of doing history.
