UBC student Nimrit Toor is the recipient of the 2017 W. Kaye Lamb award for the best student works. The award was presented at the Federation’s annual conference awards night in Nakusp, BC on May 26, 2018.
Nimrit is a 3rd year student at UBC in the Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice program. Nimrit’s video called “The South Okanagan Punjabi Community” documents memories, local histories, and experiences of Punjabi-Canadians growing up in the South Okanagan.
Nimrit’s professor — Ajay Bhardwaj — comments that Nimrit’s video is “unique in its blend of a complex rage of issues within a single but interconnected narrative to create a sense of the totality of experience of a small Punjabi community. The video gives smaller Punjabi communities of BC a voice that is often submerged in the dominant ambience of the larger Punjabi communities in Greater Surrey and Vancouver areas.”
