Chilliwack’s Paisley House is getting a lot of attention these days. The home— one of Chilliwack’s oldest— is on the demolition block, though the developer has offered it for free to anyone willing to cover the costs to relocate it.
The structure is just one of many historic buildings that have been demolished in the last ten years in the community. Heritage Chilliwack Society — formed after the demolition of the Paramount Theatre — has done much to draw attention to the woeful state of heritage conservation in Chilliwack.
With property prices soaring in the Lower Mainland it is no wonder developers are seeking new properties to build multi-family dwellings on. The issue of saving heritage homes is one shared by many communities in BC, and one that many historical societies are working to document before they are gone.
